Northern Tanzania

Ngorongoro Crater

A collapsed volcano of 260 km² with the highest density of wildlife in Africa. Black rhino included.

About Ngorongoro Crater

Two million years ago a volcano collapsed here. What remains is a 260 km² crater with steep walls, a soda lake and a permanent population of some 25,000 large animals that never need to leave.

That makes Ngorongoro the most reliable place in Tanzania to see the Big Five in a single day, including the rare black rhino. It is also the busiest — which is why we descend early, while most vehicles are still at breakfast.

On the crater rim you sleep at 2,300 metres. Bring a fleece; it drops to about ten degrees.

What you will see here

  • Black rhino — one of the last reliable places to see them
  • The Big Five in a single day
  • Views over the crater from the rim at sunrise
  • Maasai villages and coffee farms in the Highlands
