When do you really see the Great Migration?

The herds move all year round, but not everywhere and not always as spectacularly. Our guide Emmanuel explains where they are, month by month.

The question we get most often: when should I go to see the Great Migration? The honest answer is that you can see it all year — it is just somewhere different every month, and what you get to see varies enormously.

January to March: calving season

In the south of the Serengeti, around Ndutu, hundreds of thousands of calves are born within a few weeks. That draws the predators in. If you want to see hunting, this is the time to come — not high season.

June to September: the river crossings

This is where the footage everyone knows comes from. The herds cross the Grumeti and later the Mara, with crocodiles waiting for them. Spectacular, but unpredictable: sometimes they hesitate on the bank for three days.

Anyone who guarantees you will see the crossing is selling you something they cannot deliver.

What we do do: we choose your camp based on the month you travel, and we stay flexible. If the herds are further north than expected, we move with them.

Why we do not resell safaris

Plenty of operators book your trip with a local company and add a margin. We do it ourselves. That is more expensive to set up and cheaper for you.
